Best.Advice.Ever Part 19

If you missed the other parts of this, check them out here. This obviously is to do with my absolute obsession with "Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen" If you haven't seen the video, it is posted on part 1, or you can easily youtube it.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

It's true...even when I read some parts of Glamour or Cosmo (which i LOVE) sometimes I feel inadequate...maybe it's best to take these magazines with a grain of salt...I've tried to read them just for fashion and other advice, but some days I sink back into old habits.

Read the directions, even if you dont follow them.

You don't always have to follow the "one" path to get to your goals. You'll get there in the best way for you, as long as you make your decisions in your best interests. One person's way isn't always the best way for you, but take advice and suggestions to heart, they can only help you pave your own way.

Dance even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

This is one of the most sound pieces of advice that I have heard. It may sound stupid, but starting your own dance party can be really good for the mind and the soul. It can help clear your head, release frustration and endorphins. It gets your body going and makes you feel good; not to mention, it is a good form of exercise that does not feel like exercise.

Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can dont be afraid of it, or what other people think of it,
its the greatest instrument youll ever own.
.

Your body is also the only thing that you came into this world with, and the only thing you leave with. It's something you can take pride in, and you should.

Maybe youll marry, maybe you wont, maybe youll have children,
maybe you wont, maybe youll divorce at 40, maybe youll dance the funky chicken
on your 75th wedding anniversary.

The only way we can see if these things will happen is to take chances, not sit around waiting for things to happen magically...doing that pretty much guarantees nothing will happen. Take a chance and see where it leads you.

Get plenty of calcium.

For real-keep moving, you don't want old, fragile bones too early; keep the dance parties up and the calcium in

Dont feel guilty if you dont know what you want to do with your life
the most interesting people I know didnt know at 22 what they wanted to do with
their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds know still don't

I've seen this more and more as I've grown up-when we were little, we knew exactly what we wanted, but as we got older, we found more interests and things that we didn't even know were possible...Always work for what you want, but don't leave yourself out in the cold while, you're waiting to get there.

Stretch

Not only is stretching good for your muscles, it can also help you destress and clear your head. Stretching out your muscles will warm up your body and your brain; it will help you feel better. Practice deep breathing while you stretch; you will boost the oxygen flow throughout your body and feel refreshed.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

I love this idea...keep the things that make you happy and remind you of happy things. I don't really have any love letters, but I keep every single letter or note that was written to me...I love the memories-they help me see the evolution of friendship and really appreciate the awesome people who I share my life with.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing
this, tell me how.

Okay, I am standing up right now and saying that I am the WORST at taking compliments...if you're at least half way honest, you'll stand up here with me. We don't want to seem too self absorbed to say thank you, and on days when we aren't feeling 100%, denying a compliment just helps us feed into our own self destructive bottomless pit. To be honest, when I think about it, when people can't take a compliment or deny a compliment, it actually seems like they are trying to fish for more compliments than just that one. I am going to try from now on to thank everyone for the compliments that they give me (even if I do not feel like they are true or deserved), and think positively so that I can hopefully see those aspects in myself that they chose to notice.

Dont be reckless with other peoples hearts, dont put up with people who
are reckless with yours.

Just like "treat others the way you want to be treated" but with a twist...Respect others, but give yourself the respect that you reserve...inside AND out. Respect your body, your mind, your heart, and your soul; don't compromise yourself just because it will make someone else happy. If they really care about you and love you, they won't be reckless with you and won't make you put up with any of that.

Sing.

Seems kind of random, right? Not really. Just think about how much fun you have car jamming, singing along to any song that you kind of know the words to; add in friends and it becomes a party. I can't sing, but music pretty much dictates my life; I time myself using songs instead of minutes and hours. I pretty much do everything to music, and I'm always singing along or dancing. It makes me smile, it gives me energy, it brings me peace and fun, and it reminds me not to take myself or anyone else so seriously.

Do one thing everyday that scares you.

Challenge yourself to face your fears; chances are, these things that are holding us back are really not that serious, and with rational and positive thinking, we can at least trick ourselves for the moment that we are not scared of these things. Whether it is public speaking, or trying new foods, go for it. You never know what you can open up by being brave just one time.

Best.Advice.Ever (part 2)

If you missed part one of this series, check out this post. Be sure to watch the video if you have not.

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying
is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your
worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Worrying seems to be second nature for most of us; we worry about getting places on time, whether things will work out or not, and where will will be in a year, five, or ten. This is a piece of advice that I definitely need to take to heart. I am about to graduate and all I seem to do when I don't busy myself is worry about my job situation, and where I will be come May 16. This worrying has taken a huge toll on me-I've lost sleep and have come near ruining a very dear friendship. The dark side of worrying is scary, especially when your worry becomes too much to bear. Even though I worry-a lot, I am a huge believer in "shit happens" and "right time-right place", as well as "everything happens for a reason". I know, I am so cliche, but when I do finally get myself to relax and be rational again, I look at the way things in my life have fallen into place so far and realize that these things are true. Some shit does have to happen in order for you to appreciate the good and learn from the bad, and the shit is going to happen; worrying about it won't get you anywhere. As with everything, going in with a positive attitude; maybe saying Okay, if this doesn't work out, I still have options and back up. Yes, you've got to give yourself those options and backup, but having them, and thinking positively about situations will help you throw your worries away for a while. With less worry, you will be able to see the positive things in life and be able to appreciate them, as they are making your life worth it, in spite of all the worries and uncertainty that you have. Please, don't let those worries keep you from living your life.

Best Advice.Ever. (part 1)

If you have not heard Baz Lurhmann's "Everybody Must Wear Sunscreen" (based on an essay by Mary Schmich), you MUST. This commencement speech does have the best advice that anyone and everyone can use.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

We all have this problem. I can look at myself in the mirror every day and find at least 5 things that I don't like. I'm embarrassed to say that, but it is true; and for most women, it happens. I challenge you to look in the mirror and really look at what you are seeing. So what if I have a zit; maybe my eyes are a little puffy or dark today; I don't like my nose. Maybe I see a little bit of a muffin top when i wear jeans, maybe my arms aren't as firm as they should be, but that's me. Next time you look in the mirror, try to see the beautiful person that you are; no one notices those flaws as much as you do. Anyone who notices those flaws and uses them to discount you from the beautiful person that you are has no business in your life.

All of those things you see; the flaws that make you want to hide on some days. They can be fixed. It may take some time, but being positive and most importantly not cutting yourself down, will help you find ways to fix these things. Don't concentrate too much on a diet because you will think that others will find you more attractive. Do it because it will make you feel better. Don't call yourself fat; instead, celebrate yourself and the progress you've made. Keep having fun while in the process of bettering yourself, that way when you reach your goal, you will have all of those memories and beautiful times to look back on. Life doesn't put itself on hold just because you aren't satisfied with yourself, and you should never put your life on hold for that reason. Focus on your positives aspects while improving on what you perceive as your negatives.
